We all have bad mornings when we wake up, feel groggy, and can think of nothing better than returning to the duvet. However, heading back to bed isn’t always an option for everyone.
If you’re like me, when you finally get out of bed, you speed off to the bathroom, take a quick shower, spruce up your make-up and just before taking your first bite of breakfast, you realise that you are already late for work.
The thought of spending the whole day at work overwhelms you, even before you step out of the house. Such a hurried routine can really stress out your day, leaving you frustrated and out of whack.
Most of us stick to the bad habits that hold us back, waking up like this being just one of them. But, that doesn’t have to be the case.
A good day starts in the morning. How you spend your morning will set the tone for the rest of your day, and eventually the outcome and quality of your life. That’s why it’s vital to start your day on a high note.
You’re probably already aware that some of the world’s greatest people start their day with an empowering morning routine that motivates them to maximise their potential.
Look, life doesn’t come with instructions, but that’s no excuse for poor life choices. While most people have dull and unhealthy routines that ruin their days, start making a change to yours.
To start, you need an effective, natural and stress-free routine you can easily follow to help you feel better in the mornings and enhance your mood and energy levels. It’s the small changes that have the biggest impact on your life.
This is why I want to provide you with six ways you can supercharge your morning routine for an improved and happier lifestyle.
1. Wake up earlier
In order to fit this routine into your morning, you’re going to need to wake up earlier. I know, I know, easier said than done – but seriously, you’ll feel the benefit. Try making a small change to start by setting your alarm just 30 minutes earlier, soon enough you’ll want to get up earlier and earlier.
If you’re really struggling, try getting to bed a little earlier by following these top tips.
2. Drink lemon water as soon as you wake up.
When you wake up, before doing anything else, make a habit of drinking a glass of lemon water. Lemon juice is known to cleanse your digestive system, detoxify your body and get your metabolism up and running.
Drinking a cold glass of lemon water as soon as you wake up will not only raise your resting metabolic rate, but the cold water will shock your body into waking up fresh.
As well as that, water also helps the body in digestion, circulation and transportation of nutrients. So the next time you visit the grocery store, remember to include lemons to your shopping list.
3. 10-20 minute meditation.
Some people may ignore this, but meditation is so important for a good morning routine. Since your day can get pretty hectic, taking a few minutes in the morning to be at total peace in a calm environment has so many positive benefits. What you do with the time is entirely up to you, if you’re spiritual person, you can spend the time connecting to a higher power, if you’re not spiritual, then spend the time connecting with yourself.
Meditating not only helps to boost your creativity and mental clarity but, it also makes you stay calm, focused and centred. Other than the mentioned psychological benefits of meditation, it can have a positive effect on your physical body too, boosting your immune system and it’s even been scientifically proven to change the physical structure of the brain of long-term users.
Find somewhere comfortable to sit, or lie down and to start download a guided meditation app or hit up Youtube (there’s plenty of guided meditations on there). The aim is to try to keep your mind as clear as possible, take deep breaths and try to be calm.
4. Exercise in the morning.
Exercising in the morning helps you to stay physically and mentally fit by setting your body on fat-burning mode. It lifts your energy levels, gets your blood pumping and kick starts your body’s metabolism. Besides, exercising gives you a feeling of accomplishment, so you can go to work knowing you have done something worthwhile before the majority of your co-workers have even got out of bed.
There are many forms of exercises to participate in, ranging from morning jogs to lifting weights. Vary your morning activities, on one day you could go for a morning run and on another, do some strength training, or intervals.
Morning exercises enhance productivity, mental health, keep you alert and elevate your attitude to get things done.
5. Take a healthy breakfast.
Never skip breakfast.
You have probably heard this phrase over and over, but, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Skipping breakfast will make you tired and sluggish due to the decreased energy and sugar levels.
Taking a light breakfast, on the other hand, will help you avoid the temptation to eat unhealthy fast foods because you will start feeling hungry the moment you leave the house. Try building a breakfast filled with whole grains, raw fruits, salads and vegetables. For something to drink, I recommend green tea, smoothies, Bulletproof Coffee and fresh juice.
6. Make a to-do list.
Jotting down a to-do list or schedule may sound pointless, but it is a genius way to kick start your day. Your first to do list could even be your new morning routine?
Since everyone loves ticking of a check list, following one really helps motivate you to achieve your goals. Starting with the biggest task, and finishing on the small tasks, your day will feel way more organised than you ever thought possible.
Start off your morning with the above habits, and you will be well on your way to increasing your energy levels and motivation to keep you active all day long. Do not rush them by trying to incorporate them all at once. Start slow. The secret is to try them one at a time and gradually develop your new morning routine.
