Plexus VitalBiome Review + Ingredients Deep Dive + Explaining Your MicroBiome

Understanding probiotics and how VitalBiome works.

* I’m a Plexus® Ambassador and for this review, Plexus sent me a free bottle of VitalBiome™. All thoughts and opinions are mine.

Plexus VitalBiomeOne of my biggest passions as a health & fitness coach is to bring awareness to the importance of gut health. It’s also a huge passion of mine because discovering probiotics and getting my gut healthy was a life-changer for me.

A whopping 80% of your immune system and about 95% of your body’s serotonin (mood elevating hormone) are in your gut, so in my opinion, this is one of the absolute most important things to take care of. Consuming fermented foods and a diet rich in veggies, healthy fats, and lean proteins are critical to supporting your gut health. However, for many of us, eating such a perfect diet all the time just isn’t that easy, and oftentimes it isn’t enough.

That’s why I believe Probiotics are one of the most important supplements out there to take daily.

“Probiotics provide an extra layer of strength. (They behave like) soldiers in your intestinal tract to combat pathogens.” ~Dr. Mary Ellen Sanders

It’s no secret that our world is growing more toxic everyday, making it impossible to get all the vitamins, nutrients, minerals, & probiotics we need from diet alone. Even if you’re diet is darn near perfect, you could still be deficient and need to supplement like I do due to an array of factors from low food quality and poor environmental conditions to a hectic lifestyle with way too much stress and hormonal changes in your body.

And don’t even get me started with antibiotics.

For years I’ve been taking probiotics—every single day—and experimenting with tons of different brands and dosages. That all changed for me when I first tried Plexus ProBio5. No other Probiotic has worked as GOOD for me as ProBio5 and it’s been a staple for me ever since. I even get playfully teased by my friends and family, joking with me how my answer to almost anything is—ProBio5. LOL 🙂 If you wanna check out my post about ProBio5, then click here.

Nowadays I’m even more ecstatic over my probiotic system because I’ve added in VitalBiome. When Plexus released details about a new probiotic—VitalBiome—I totally flipped out because I didn’t want to lose my ProBio5. What a relief when I learned that ProBio5 wasn’t going anywhere and that VitalBiome is another super high quality probiotic that can be taken with ProBio5 or on its own.

I’ve been taking my ProBio5 before bedtime (I keep the bottle on my nightstand so it’s convenient and easy not to forget) and first thing when I wake up in the morning I’ll take my VitalBiome. So far, I’m loving the combo!

“If there’s one thing to know about the human body; it’s this: the human body has a ringmaster. This ringmaster controls your digestion, your immunity, your brain, your weight, your health and even your happiness. This ringmaster is the gut.” ~ Nancy S. Mure

What Is A MicroBiome?

VitalBiome Study ResultsMicroBiome has become a popular term in the world of probiotics and gut health. Your microbiome is the trillions of microbes in your gut—and trust me, you want to as much good bacteria in there as possible.

Here’s a quick look at the definition on Google:

mi·cro·bi·ome
ˌmīkrōˈbīōm/Submit
noun
the microorganisms in a particular environment (including the body or a part of the body).
“we depend on a vast army of microbes to stay alive: a microbiome that protects us against germs, breaks down food to release energy, and produces vitamins”
the combined genetic material of the microorganisms in a particular environment.
“understanding the microbiome—human, animal, and environmental—is as important as the human genome”

LACTOBACILLUS
A ‘friendly’ microbe that lives in our digestive system. Lactobacillus produce lactic acid which helps make your digestive system less hospitable for undesirable microbes. Lactobacillus helps improve the digestion of foods and also help support a healthy immune system. Lactobacillus stimulates powerful defense cells like natural killer cells to help counter unhealthy invaders. VitalBiome™ includes the following highly studied strains of Lactobacillus to deliver a number of health benefits.

WebMD says, “Many bacteria and other organisms live in our bodies normally. “Friendly” bacteria such as lactobacillus can help us break down food, absorb nutrients, and fight off “unfriendly” organisms that might cause diseases such as diarrhea.”

So let’s take a closer look at the Lactobacillus strains in VitalBiome:

Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM (Natural)
One of the most highly studied probiotic strains that are supported by over 100 scientific studies, including 50 human clinical studies. L. acidophilus NCFM survives the journey through the gastrointestinal tract and helps crowd out bad microbes while producing compounds that overpower bad microbes to help improve gut health and maintain the balance of healthy microbiota.

Lactobacillus helveticus R0052 (Natural)
Validated by 82 scientific studies, 45 of which are human clinical studies, to enhance gut microbiome health and help improve mood. L. helveticus R0052 can adhere to the intestinal cell lining, thereby helping to maintain the intestinal barrier of the gut, while promoting immune and gut health. L. helveticus R0052 has also been clinically demonstrated to help reduce feelings of stress and anxiety while helping improve mood when combined with Bifidobacterium longum R0175.

Lactobacillus plantarum LP-115 (Natural)
Validated by four scientific studies, and has a long history of safe use. L. plantarum LP-115 has exceptional survival ability through stomach acid and helps produce lactic acid which helps inhibit growth of undesirable microbes. L. plantarum LP-115 has excellent adhesion to the intestinal lining, which brings this healthy bacterium in close contact with the intestinal immune system, giving the probiotics a better opportunity to modulate immune response.

BIFIDOBACTERIUM
Bifidobacterium is one of the best-studied probiotics. Bifidobacterium attaches to the cells of the intestine and help protects the physical lining of your intestine against damage from bad microbes. Bifidobacterium also helps produce important vitamins like vitamins B12, biotin and K. When you were born, Bifidobacterium made up 95% of your intestinal bacteria and helps promote gut microbiome health. Bifiidobacteria are broadly recognized for their key role in the gut microbiome throughout life. VitalBiome uses highly studied strains of the Bifidobacterium to promote balance in the intestinal tract and benefits health.

I found some more good research over at SelfHacked: “Bifidobacteria account for more than 80% of microorganisms within the intestine and Bifidobacterium bifidum is the second most prominent species found in breast-fed infants. During adulthood, the levels of Bifidobacteria decrease considerably but remain relatively stable (2–14%), decreasing again in old age…

…Various diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and allergies have been associated with lower numbers of Bifidobacteria at various stages of life.”

So let’s take a closer look at the Bifidobacterium strains in VitalBiome:

Bifidobacterium lactis Bl-04 (Natural)
Validated by 13 scientific studies, and well is suited for intestinal survival with its ability to tolerate stomach acid and for its ability to adhere to the human intestinal tract. B. lactis Bl-04 helps improve gastrointestinal health and has been shown in a clinical study to help maintain and more rapidly restore microbiota after antibiotic treatment. B. lactis Bl-04 has been shown in clinical studies to improve immune system health.

Bifidobacterium lactis Bi-07 (Natural)
A very powerful probiotic that has been demonstrated in over 36 scientific studies to help improve digestion and enhance immune system response. In a human clinical study, B. lactis Bi-07 has been shown to help reduce bloating, improve intestinal regularity and provide relief for gastrointestinal problems.

Bifidobacterium longum R0175 (Natural)
Clinically shown to support mood and relaxation when combined with L. helveticus R0052. Stress and anxiety impacts a significant percent of the Americans, and an imbalance of gut microbiota can negatively impact the biochemical functioning of brain cells. The combination of L. helveticus R0052 and B. longum R0175 helps reduce stress induced digestive distress. The combination also helps reduce stress hormone (cortisol) levels while significantly decreasing stress reaction, promoting greater sense of relaxation and improving mood.

SACCHAROMYCES BOULARDII
Saccharomyces boulardii is not considered a bacteria, but is a yeast that happens to function like a probiotic in the body, and survives passage through stomach acid to deliver its benefits to the intestinal tract. S. boulardii is gut-healthy probiotic that helps regulate intestines microbiota and protect against harmful microbes.

I read this over at Selfhacked: “S. boulardii is a commonly prescribed probiotic that can prevent or improve a number of GI issues. This probiotic also combats bacterial, parasite and fungal infections, and exhibits other important benefits.”

So let’s take a closer look at the Saccharomyces boulardii strain in VitalBiome:

Saccharomyces boulardii I-3799 (Natural)
A highly studied probiotic which protects and maintains normal intestinal microbiota, helps restore disruptions to microbiota imbalance, and supports digestive health.

BACILLUS COAGULANS
A spore-forming bacterial species within the genus Bacillus. B. coagulans forms reproductive structures called spores. Spores are very hardy and are activated in the acidic environment of the stomach and begin germinating and proliferating in the intestine. B. coagulans is a lactic acid producing probiotic which provides a wide range of intestinal health benefits.

A little research over at SelfHacked states: “B. coagulans is a promising probiotic that can lower insulin levels, improve cholesterol, IBS, and arthritis. This bacterium was recently shown to stimulate muscle recovery in athletes.”

So let’s take a closer look at the B. coagulans strain in VitalBiome:

Bacillus coagulans MTCC 5856 (Natural)
Has been demonstrated by 11 clinical studies to reduce GI distress and relieve bowel discomfort and benefit health.

Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose (Natural)
Found in the delayed release veggie capsule shell and is made from natural cellulose obtained from softwood trees, mainly pine and spruce. The natural cellulose is then modified to a form of gum or gel like material. VitalBiome’s™ delayed release capsule is non-GMO, vegan, kosher and halal.

Brown Rice Flour (Natural)
Brown rice flour is made from rice hulls that are sterilized and ground into a fine powder. Brown rice flour is a natural ingredient used as an excipient to ensure consistent capsule fill weight.

Medium Chain Triglycerides (Natural)
This is used as a natural excipient that prevents both powder and capsules from sticking to surfaces during encapsulation.

    Hi Ashley,

I am now entering my 4th week of my Plexus journey & came across your website while searching for information about Vital Biome. I enjoy reading other people’s testimonies and how Plexus has helped them and found your website very informative.

Just to give you a little background about myself, I am 51 years old and suffer from a lot of different “ailments” that keep me from living the life that I so want to live. I have scoliosis and suffer from back pain, high blood pressure (not too high, low dose lisinopril), acid reflux (taking Prilosec-not like I should due to what it does to your body), hypothyroidism (taking generic synthroid), along with other symptoms such as mild depression, no energy, always feeling tired, difficulty concentrating, just to name a few. I’m a train wreck!!!
Depression, high blood pressure, GERD and diabetes runs in our family and here I am, part of that group.
I spend each day dealing with a lot of pain that, after researching, sounds much like fibromyalgia. My hands, elbows, feet, shoulders and low back causes me a ridiculous amount of pain most days, which keeps me from being able to exercise the way that I would like to. Just simple things like going out for a brief walk is too painful right now.
I turned to Plexus after seeing many posts on Facebook from my Aunt, who is currently dealing with pancreatic cancer, said that while using Plexus, it has helped her tumors decrease in size! Her doctor basically told her that “this just does not happen with this sort of cancer and the tumors have decreased significantly by 25-30%!!!”
My mother started taking Plexus back in August of this year (2017) and seems to be doing great with it. She said that her joints and knee pain has subsided and she has lost 20 lbs!

After hearing that, I began researching Plexus a little more. As I mentioned, I am starting my 4th week- I started taking Plexus-Slim, BioCleanse, & ProBio 5 on October 27th. I have also introduced X-Factor and Ease into my daily routine. I only take Ease as needed for pain and discomfort, which is now on a daily basis and not sure how much is too much to take.
After just a couple of weeks, I started experiencing a lot of “die-off” symptoms such as joint & muscle pain that I had not ever experienced before. I checked with my Aunt, who is an Ambassador for Plexus, to see if this was normal, and she explained that it was. She sent me a list of potential symptoms of the die-off process and really the only one that I was experiencing was the joint/muscle pain. I would imagine that I have a lot of candida in my body that Plexus is trying to “flush out” after being prescribed the medications that I currently take; along with Ibuprofen, antibiotics, steroid injections & meds, pain meds for back pain and birth control when I was younger. Yikes!!

As of today, the pain in my elbow and arm are about to drive me crazy! I spent last night with a heating pad on my elbow/arm to try and reduce the level of pain, along with taking 2 Ease tablets. It seemed to take the edge off a little, but I was still pretty uncomfortable.

After reading/hearing about what Plexus has done for others and how people that used to be on several different medications are now either taking none or down to one, I cannot even fathom that at this point. I plan to continue to use the Plexus products and even placed an order today for Block, Vital Biome and more Ease, as I’m anxious to find out if this is going to help me. If you can provide any information or advise, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your informative website that helps educate those of us that are Plexus “newbies.”

    Best,
    Tami

    • Hey there. I’m sorry you’re going through so much, but hang in there. There is hope and you have to keep pushing forward the best you can. 🙂 In this article I share my research about “die off” and several ways to ease the symptoms…here is the link: http://www.extrememakeovers.com/the-candida-die-off-process/

Another thing is to be very mindful of your diet so as not to “feed” the yeast you’re trying to regulate. The yeast crave starchy sugars to survive…and like with anything, survival is what we all fight for. So fight back the best you can loading up on veggies, fiber, lean proteins and healthy fats that feed the good bacteria and assist with optimal gut flora health.

Be mindful that something can work perfectly for one person, while it may not be ideal for another. This can be due to an array of reasons (genetics, diet, lifestyle, medication, environment, specific goals, etc.) Like I said, your diet is the most important thing to focus on. Here’s an article I wrote about the 3 universal rules “diets” should follow: http://www.extrememakeovers.com/3-universal-rules-every-diet-follow/

So keep working on it every day and do the best you can. Creating healthier “trade offs” is critical to achieving this for the longterm. Here’s a couple posts about that you may find helpful:

      http://www.extrememakeovers.com/common-mistake-most-dieters-make/

      http://www.extrememakeovers.com/tips-ditching-sugar-will-change-life/

I’ve personally really loved Plexus products in my daily regimen for 4 years now. Plexus makes it so convenient with their 60-day money back guarantee. If it doesn’t work for you the way you’d hoped, you can return it and get a refund.

You can read about why I feel strongly about specific supplements here:
      http://www.extrememakeovers.com/core-supplements-personally-take-optimal-health/

It really is all about experimenting to find what works best for you. No one knows your body better than you do…listen to it the best you can and add in healthy habits as often as possible.

*Please be mindful I’m simply sharing my personal experience along with some of the information I found helpful or insightful, so you can continue to do your own research alongside your health care practitioner.*

If you need more guidance and/or a step-by-step program to boost your efforts (complete with meal plan, yummy healthy recipes, and a next steps module for after the program is over) then My best-seller, Purify Your Gut In 10 Days, is worth checking out. You can learn more about it here.

“a little progress each day adds up to big results.”

Best of luck on your journey to a healthier, happier you. You’re not alone. ~A
